Gullwing Mercedes-Benz Sells for $4.6 Million
The economy must be doing just fine, judging from the stratospheric auction prices recently seen in Scottsdale, Arizona. An aluminum-bodied 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe fetched $4.62 million, more than double the amount of a standard steel-skinned version. The auction house of Gooding and Company, which managed to find buyers for more than $39 million dollars worth of classic cars over the weekend, handled the sale of the lightweight coupe. The mega-buck Gullwing is one of only 29 aluminum versions of the 300 SL built with this vastly lighter bodywork. Meant for the fender-bashing world of motorsport, this survivor is going to be the (three-pointed) star of any collection.
